Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian, organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

Médecins sans Frontières is seeking for its field position: Patient Support Activity Manager- GAZA

Context:

MSF has been present in Jerusalem and West Bank since 1988 and in Gaza Strip since 1989, mostly focusing in mental health care in Nablus governorate and in specialized surgery and rehabilitation for burns in Gaza. In addition, in 2019 OCP started a project focusing on osteomyelitis in Gaza strip and is part of the reconstructive surgery unit of MoH Nasser hospital since 2020.

OCBA is present since 1997 in Hebron (WB) with mental health activities, and started new projects in Jerusalem and Bethlehem in 2017. Currently, MSF OCBA is in process to obtain approval to implement mental health activities in Rafah, Gaza Strip.

OCB arrived in May 2018, to start a reconstructive surgery program in Gaza Strip in North-Gaza Governorate, through a partnership with the Union health worker committee in Al-Awda hospital.

The general setup of the project consisted of 4 post-operative clinics, running on an ambulatory strategy (OPD), offering medical consultations, physiotherapy and wound dressing sessions. As well, there are two surgical programs Burn care in Shifa Hospital in the northern part of Gaza, and osteomyelitis and trauma care in Nasser Hospital in the South.

Mission

Main responsibilities:

Defining, coordinating, integrating and monitoring all patient support activities (emotional, education and social support activities) within the project according to MSF principles, protocols and standards in order to empower the patient in front of his illness and treatment, beyond the purely medical aspects of care.

Accountabilities:

  1. Assessing mental health and patient support needs and defining the patient support strategy according to the changing medical needs and context
  2. Developing patient support tools related to the Mental Health care (counselling and education protocols, health promotion messages, flyers, flipcharts, games, etc.)
  3. Ensuring implementation of patient support activities (health talks, education and counselling sessions, defaulter tracing, strengthening of support groups, linking with social actors, community awareness activities, etc.) according to protocols and tools.
  4. Working with MH Referent, MTL and MedCo to develop patient oriented outcome indicators.
  5. Monitoring and evaluating patient support activities (defining indicators as above and supporting with incorporation into the Electronic Medical Record design, collecting and analysing data)
  6. Ensuring good communication and collaboration with the other components of the project and other partners working on patient support
  7. Managing staff involved in patient support (mental health providers and social workers). Planning and supervising, in close coordination with the HR department, the associated processes (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, development and internal communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to improve staff capabilities and to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required

Professional skills

Qualifications: University degree in psychology, counselling, social sciences/work or MD with postgraduate diploma in psychiatry

Experience:

  1. Essential: at least two years’ work experience in related jobs.
  2. Desirable: work experience with MSF or other NGO’s
  3. Team management experience
  4. Languages: English is essential. French and Arabic is an asset

  • Competencies: People Management and Development, behavioural flexibility, results and quality orientation, teamwork and cooperation, computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
