Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the United Nations Security and Safety Service (UNSSS), Division for Management (DM) of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The Intern reports to the Assistant Chief of UNSSS and supports the work of the Security and Safety Service.

The internship is for six (6) months with a desired starting date in December 2022.

The position is UNPAID and full-time, i.e five days (40 hours per week).

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely or carry out the entire internship from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home/residence country and the internship duty station as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities

Within assigned authority, the Intern will be responsible for the following duties:

  1. - Assists and supports senior staff in the areas security management policy and planning;
  2. - Participates in developing, managing and delivering security management projects;
  3. - Provides basic technical support in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of customised security systems;
  4. - Conducts research on new technologies as requested; keeps abreast of developments in the field; assists in testing and evaluating new products and technologies;
  5. - Assists in the Pass Office with picture taking and other administrative tasks weekly;
  6. - Performs other related duties as required.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
  • (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)
OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

For this particular position applicants should be at least in the final year of a first-level university degree in security management, criminology, criminal justice with specialization in physical/industrial security or equivalent training and experience in security and security-related fields.

•Be computer literate in standard software applications;

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second United Nations language and working knowledge of German is desirable.
