Code Academy Technical Instructor - Mercy Corps Gaza Office

  • Position Title : Code Academy Technical Instructor
  • Position Type : Regular, Full Time
  • Location   : Mercy Corps Gaza Office
  • Duration : Eight Months with Three months’ probation period

Gaza Sky Geeks (GSG) is Gaza’s leading co-working space, tech education hub, and startup accelerator, run by Mercy Corps, a nonprofit international relief and development organization with programs in the occupied Palestinian territories since the 1980s. Mercy Corps founded GSG in partnership with Google.org in 2011. We bring together online freelancers, outsourcers, and startup founders together under one roof to share ideas, best practices, code, and build brighter futures through the power of the internet. Gaza Sky Geeks’ overarching goal is to build an internationally competitive technology ecosystem in Gaza through online freelancing, outsourcing, and startups.

The GSG Code Academy is excited to announce a new opportunity to join our team.

The Code Academy Career Accelerator

For the next Career Accelerator program, we are changing the structure of our staff, and are looking for a senior, experienced developer to teach the technical content course. The instructor will be reporting to, and working very closely with, the Career Accelerator Lead, Ahmed Ajour, who will be leading the cohort, and responsible for its overall success.

Unlike in previous cohorts, where the course delivery has been mostly done by fresh graduates, with the support of a course facilitator, for the next cohort (starting in May), the instructor will be delivering most of the content, and the graduate mentors will be in the supporting role.

We feel that this will be beneficial for both the students on the course, and also for the mentors, who will have less pressure on them during their time mentoring, and will be able to revise and solidify their knowledge more easily. The graduate mentors will certainly still play a role in helping the students on the course, but they will not be expected to deliver workshops, unless they volunteer to, and the instructor agrees.

The Position

As the Code Academy Technical Instructor you will support the rapidly evolving delivery strategy for the Code Academy learning objectives, raise the bar for the quality of young talent not only in Gaza but also across Palestine and cultivate the growth of top notch junior web developers the we educate and place in the Palestinian and international job market. You will inherit and continue to build an amazing network of tech leaders and mentors throughout our integrations across our 6-month Career Accelerator Program who will have their contributions to those objectives. Likewise, you will be a leading voice and role model for an entire national tech ecosystem and aspiring young people who aspire to build a career, better and sustainable future.

You will be part of a growing team leading on the tech education component of the Code Academy Program but also part of our bigger 50+ national team members at Gaza Sky Geeks driving growth and change on every level of the work we do across Palestine.

The instructor will be responsible just for delivering the technical content of the course. The instructor will have the freedom to use external material outside of the workshops we currently use in the Code Academy. The Career Accelerator Lead will be in charge of all of the other responsibilities involved in running a cohort. We are open to hiring the instructor on a full time or part time basis, as a service contract.

We will be looking to hire by June 2021, to allow a couple of months to prepare for the cohort which starts in May. The contract will last until the end of the cohort, in November.
